“Discover”ing credit card theft

Friday, April 21st, 2006

Well, I am now a statistic. It seems someone got a hold of my Discover Card number and made over $500 worth of purchases last month to a bunch of internet sites. I immediately called Discover Card and told them about the charges and amazingly we straighten everything out and had all the charges cleared off my account in about 3 minutes… praise God!

It’s also worth mentioning that a few of the companies like Amazon and Network Solutions actually credited the charges someone made back to my account before I even knew the card had been used. I guess they somehow knew the card was stolen already. Amazon actually sent me an email letting me know someone had used my credit card and recommended I cancel the card… pretty neat.

I’m not quite sure how my credit card number got out in the open because I haven’t really used that card for a while. No one in South Africa takes Discover Card so I can’t really pin it on anything that happened here. Whatever the case everything seemed to work out in the end, but I’m going to try and be a bit more careful so there isn’t a next time.

Call me anytime… for free

Monday, April 17th, 2006

One year ago I didn’t think there would be any way I’d be using the internet to make phone calls, but I’m happy to say that time has come. I’ve been using my Vonage phone over here for a couple months and it’s been pretty reliable, so now anytime you’d like to talk and catch up with me just pick up the phone and dial (631) 236-9073. If you’re wondering about the area code, it is a New York number, but since most everyone has free long distance it shouldn’t be an issue.

Hope to hear from you all soon.

Botswana - Long Flights and Late Nights

Thursday, April 13th, 2006

This post is a little overdue since I got back from Botswana a couple weeks ago… sorry.

Long flights
Well, to start things off the plane I flew to Botswana (yeah, it was a small one) had a little cabin pressure problem and we were forced to land somewhere other than my destination I’m not sure if there’s such thing as a “little” cabin pressure problem but that’s what they said. It least I think that’s what they said? I had my head phones on during most of the annoucement so I didn’t quite hear eveary thing… oops. To make things a bit more complicated I never turned on the international calling option for my cell phone so when we landed I couldn’t call anybody to let them know what the heck was going on. I finally tracked down someone at the airport that let me use the airport phone to call a friend’s South Africa phone so she could call the people that were picking up from the airport that I wasn’t at yet.

At first we were told that the plane should be fixed in an hour… then two… which ultimately led to 3 hours of sitting in an unconditioned airport before they got us back on the plane for another hour of flying. So my original 1 hour and 30 minute flight turned into about a 6 hour endeavor. On the up side, when we boarding the plane for the second time the flight attendants were handed everyone Nando’s wraps and fries (kind of like if Delta gave you a Panera meal if your flight was delayed.). So not my best flight, but I luckily never really got frustrated so it didn’t seem all that bad.

Late Nights
Love Botswana website redesign - www.lovebotswana.org

During the first couple days at Love Botswana I was making some minor website updates as well as training one of their staff members so they could make future updates. It wasn’t too long into the updates that I offered to overhaul the entire site. Apart from give the website a graphical facelift we spent a lot of time on reorganizing the content to make it easier for people to find what they wanted when they visited the website. A project of this size usually would take me about a month to complete, but seeing that I was only going to be in Botswana for 10 days I knew I had my work cut out for me. So yes, cramming 30 days of worth of work into 10 days did call for some very late nights. I’m pretty sure the last 5 days I was there I never went to bed before 3 AM, but in the end it was well worth it. It’s important to mention that it wasn’t just me that made this update happen. I had a lot of help from people writing new copy to bo on the website.

This GIANT Aardvark was really in the middle of nowhere.

Gators are National Champs

Tuesday, April 4th, 2006

That’s right the Mighty Gators of Gainsville are the National Champs. Once again being bitten by living in South Africa the game didn’t start over here until 3 AM, but it was well worth staying up to see my alma matter go home #1!

Those Gators make me so proud!
